Gifted and Talented Education
Gifted students are those whose potential is distinctly above average in one or more of the following domains of human ability: intellectual, creative, social and physical. Talented students are those whose skills are distinctly above average in one or more areas of human performance.
Gifted and talented students can be found in all communities regardless of their cultural or economic backgrounds. It is critical for gifted and talented students to be given appropriate opportunity, stimulation and the experiences to develop their potential and satisfy their learning needs. The following are some broad guidelines around identifying and catering for gifted and talented students.
1. Giftedness in students presents itself in all manner of ways not just through an IQ test. In recent years the concept of ‘multiple intelligences’ has evolved. Daniel Goleman’s book emotional intelligence was ground breaking in this area and is well worth reading.
2. In addition to the conventional IQ test there are numerous ways these students can be identified including behaviour checklists, teacher observations and recommendations and standardized tests.
3. Parents are in good position to judge a child’s level of aptitude in this area. However, their opinion should always be characterized by a sense of realism and objectivity.
4. When choosing a school for your gifted child, ask about their Gifted and talented Policy and program
5. Common aspects of gifted and Talented Programs include, enriched curriculum options, including special camps and after-school-hours activities. Students with exceptional abilities may also be able to accelerate their progression in single subjects or whole grades.
6. Exceptional students may also be allowed to start school before the normal enrolment age. The decision is made by the principal in consultation with the parents/caregivers, school counsellor or psychologist.
7. In Primary Schools Opportunity Classes may be available for academically gifted and talented children in Years 5 and 6.
8. In Secondary, selective high schools can provide an educationally enriched environment for highly achieving, academically gifted students.
