Preparing for exams
Sitting exams can be a very daunting and stressful process for young people. Unfortunately, in some cases, anxiety about exams can result in very capable and talented students not achieving their potential. Here are some basic tips for exam preparation to reduce anxiety and ensure that students feel that they are well prepared.
1. Have a plan. Teachers should always provide students with a comprehensive ‘revision sheet’ for major exams well in advance of the exam day. Students should plan their study around this sheet to ensure that all topic areas are revised in time.
2. Have an uncluttered and pleasant place to study. This will make you feel ordered and ‘in control’ and make the task of sitting down to study not as daunting.
3. Get enough sleep. If your are tired, you will not only not be able to absorbed information efficiently you will also hinder your ability to recall information and perform on the day itself.
4. Eat healthily. A balanced diet is essential for optimal brain and body function. A diet of chocolate and coffee (common study foods) will not always achieve the optimum long term effect.
5. Keep a check on your overall life balance. Go for a walk, get some exercise and fresh air and keep a balanced view of your social life.
6. Parents need to be affirming and positive through study-time. A shoulder to lean on, and some well placed wisdom, can be invaluable in ensuring students are kept on the right track.
7. Believe in yourself and your ability. Energy expended through anxiety is far better spent on preparation and performance on the day.
8. Don’t be late! Don’t put unnecessary pressure on yourself by sleeping in or missing your bus. Be prepared and up early.
9. Keep perspective. At the end of the day what is the worst thing that could happen. There are always more important things in life than exams.
